History
Vertical Construction Inc. was formed by Peter Schmidtmann in Nederland, Colorado in 1992 to meet the growing demands of a small mountain ski town's need for change. Colorado's population was booming. People moved to the mountain and realized that their summer homes needed updating to weather the harsh winters of the Rocky Mountains.
Prior to building in Colorado, Peter Schmidtmann, owner of Vertical Construction, was eager to satisfy his creative talents. He passed on a scholarship to Parsons School of Design in New York City after receiving a B.S. from the Darden School of Education in 1989 in Virginia. Peter married his college sweetheart, began remodeling homes and commercial buildings in the Northeast, such as, Bulgari Jewlers at the Hotel Pierre.
In Colorado, Vertical Construction, remodeled historic buildings from the 1800's, built log homes, designed contemporary commercial space for clients such as Airwalk. Peter specialized in turning designs that tied architecture into their surrounding landscape.
Vertical Construction then expanded its talents to the market of the high desert of Moab, Utah. Clients demanded full on-site attention to their custom vacation homes. Some clients never saw their results until project completion because they were second homes and being built from afar. Communication and budget were always key to customer satisfaction and were not compromised by the long distance relationship.
Eleven years of harsh, long, Colorado winters drove Peter, his wife Elizabeth, and their two children to vacation in San Felipe, Baja, Mexico. Peter and his family moved permanently to San Felipe in 2006. Although the desert terrain is much different than the Rocky Mountains, the desert of Utah was a construction proving ground for the Sonoran desert of Baja.
